What DOES HL Central do?
SOCIAL EVENTS
HL Central throws most of the
social events you'll attend during your time at HLS. You'll get a
taste of these during our 1L Orientation parties, which we'll be
advertising for soon. Other things to look forward to are weekly bar
reviews at local bars and lounges, our annual Charity Bash (we've raised
thousands and thousands of dollars for various charities over the
years), Tacky Prom (most people's favorite annual HLS event), 1L Formal,
karaoke nights, and the Lincoln's Inn Society Boston Harbor Cruise.
There are tons of ways for you to get involved with events once school
starts, and we hope you will.
LAW FIRM RECRUITING
HL Central is the main
liaison between HLS students and law firms. Once 1Ls are allowed to
talk to law firms in the spring, HL Central helps organize all the
receptions for law firms that come into town. In fact, early in the
fall we will be looking for 1Ls interested in being law firm reps and
helping law firms plan and organize their receptions. These receptions
serve as the law firms' main recruiting tool before on-campus
interviewing (called EIP), so they are highly important to the firms as
well as to the Law School.
Through these efforts, HL Central has strong relationships with most
major law firms across the country, which in turn provides for excellent
networking opportunities. In fact, the relationship is co-dependent,
as most of our funding comes from law firm sponsorships. However, the
networking opportunities we provide are not limited just to law firms.
We also have relationships with several non-profits and the public
sector broadly, as many of our alumni have gone on to take prominent
positions in these areas. Also, we partner with many public interest
organizations through our community service efforts, which you will read
about below.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Like Harvard Law School, HL Central has a strong commitment to community service, and we take it seriously.
In the next couple weeks, you will be receiving applications
for our Duane Community Development Grants. These grants are awarded to
a 1L and and a 2L who exhibit a commitment to enhance student life at
HLS. Applicants outline a community development initiative and winners
receive $1,000 in the form of a $500 grant to develop the initiative as
well as a $500 cash prize.
Besides providing these grants, HL Central also puts on an annual
event called FallFest, a giant service day where we partner with several
community service organizations in the Cambridge/Boston area to allow
our students to go and give a day's worth of their time to community
service. In addition to FallFest, we also do many smaller community
service trips throughout the year. Don't forget to express your
interest in this area if you'd like to get involved.
ARTS, CULTURE, AND EXCURSIONS
Did you know that
the Broadway show Wicked is coming to Boston? We received a huge
discount on group tickets to the show, subsidized a portion of the
discounted price ourselves, and will be selling them to you at a great
bargain in the near future so that you can go to the show with your
friends and classmates. More info to come shortly. From shows like
this to a ski trip to hiking, museums, and casinos, HL Central organizes
many fun excursions, often related to arts and culture.
ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS JUST FOR 1Ls
If
you ask upperclassmen, many will tell you that the HL Central 1L Cup
was their favorite event of 1L year. 1L Cup (if we were to forced to
describe it in words) is a field day of sorts where sections compete
against each other for school-wide pride and bragging rights. Of
course, we provide drinks and food, making it even more fun. And this
year, we'll be helping sections organize pre-1L Cup pregames and pep
rallies!
Besides the Orientation parties and 1L Formal that we mentioned
above, we have many events every year just for 1Ls. We'll be looking
for several section reps from each 1L section to help us with these and
to serve as liaisons between the HL Central Board and the 1Ls. We
encourage everyone to get involved!
LINCOLN'S INN SOCIETY
The Lincoln' Inn
Society (LIS), now a part of HL Central, is an exclusive Harvard Law
School society that is over 100 years old and counts among its former
members CEOs, Supreme Court Justices, and elected officials at all
levels. The LIS Director, Jeremy Campbell, will be sending all of you
an LIS welcome letter once school starts, and we encourage everyone to
join. You will also receive more info about the LIS Boston
Harbor Cruise, open to all students, in the upcoming weeks.
We'll be holding a general interest meeting sometime in the first
couple weeks of school, and we would love for all 1Ls to attend. Please
be on the lookout in the near future for a first month events calendar,
invitations to the Orientation parties, the Duane Community Development
Grants application, HL Central planners in your Hark mailboxes, tickets
to Wicked, and more info about our intro meeting. And if you haven't
already, please register for HL Central through our website.
Our board is very excited for the upcoming year. We hope y'all
